Stainless Steel Shot & Grit : Non-Ferrous Surface Treatment Without Iron Contamination

Stainless steel abrasives for surface treatment of aluminum, zinc, copper, magnesium and stainless steel components. Unlike carbon steel media they cause no iron contamination, leaving no rust or staining on the substrate, so a clean finish is achieved without any additional chemical treatment.

What Is Stainless Steel Shot?

Stainless steel shot and grit are blasting media made from steel with a high chromium and nickel content
used on substrates where carbon steel media cannot be applied.

Chromium forms a protective layer that resists corrosion,
while nickel adds the toughness that keeps particles from breaking down under repeated impact.

There are two forms — shot, spherical, for cleaning and polishing, and grit, angular, for creating a surface profile before coating.
Whenever carbon steel shot or grit is ruled out by the risk of iron contamination or corrosion, stainless steel media is the required choice.

Select the Right Media by Application

Application Recommended Grade Result
Aluminum & Die Casting STELUX CN, C Iron-free finish, prevents white rust, ready for painting and anodizing
Stainless steel castings & forgings STELUX C · CN / CG Casting scale removed with a uniform finish, anchor profile where coating requires one
Zinc, copper & magnesium alloys STELUX C or CN Soft non-ferrous substrates cleaned with no embedded iron particles
Hot-dip galvanized components STELUX CG Paint-ready surface condition while limiting damage to the zinc layer
Surface profiling before coating STELUX CG Angular particles cut a uniform anchor pattern, improving coating adhesion

* The recommended grade depends on the substrate and the required finish. Start with shot (STELUX C · CN) when the goal is cleaning and polishing, and with grit (CG) when the goal is a surface profile before coating.

  • (near-total oxidation resistance)
11124-6
STELUX CG Grit (angular) ~30% — ~2% -
  • Non-ferrous metals and stainless castings/forgings
  • Hot-dip galvanized components
  • Surface profile creation
11124-7

* STELUX CN suits processes with the highest cleanliness requirements. STELUX CG is an angular, higher-hardness grade optimized for creating a surface profile before coating.
* Both already reflect ISO 11124-6 / -7, published in June 2025.

Abrasive Media Comparison

Criterion Stainless Steel (STELUX) Carbon Steel Shot Glass Beads Aluminum Oxide
Iron Contamination None High None None
Hardness & durability High (many reuse cycles) High Low (breaks down quickly) High hardness, fast conumption
Surface finish Uniform sheen, or defined profile with grit Coarser finish Smooth, bright/td> Excellent for angular profiling
Dust generation Low Midium High High
Cost per kg High Low Low Medium
Cost per part Low (long life, no post-treatment) Rises when chemical cleaning is added High (few reuse cycles) High (few reuse cycles)

* Looking at media price alone, mineral abrasives can appear cheaper. Measured per finished part, stainless steel media is often the more economical choice: mineral media such as aluminum oxide is consumed quickly and can be reused only a limited number of times, while stainless steel media recirculates from tens to hundreds of cycles, lowering total process cost. Each media type has its place — the right choice depends on the substrate and the required finish.

Total Cost of Ownership: Compare Total Cost, Not Price

Purchase price is only part of the total. A shot blasting process has to be judged on media consumption per part, equipment wear, reject and rework rates, dust extraction load and downstream chemical treatment costs as well as the media itself.

Through the W-Care service, Winoa assesses each element of your process, recommends the right abrasive and helps bring total production cost down.

Costs beyond purchase price

  • Media consumption per part
  • Equipment wear and part replacement
  • Operating mix stability
  • Reject and rework rates
  • Dust extraction load
  • Downstream chemical treatment

STELUX in operation

  • Stable operating mix
  • High cleaning rate, consistent quality
  • Optimal surface finish
  • Reduced equipment wear
  • 100% recyclable — supports compliance
  • No additional chemical treatment

FAQ

What sets Stelux™ stainless steel shot apart from other abrasives?

Stelux™ stainless steel shot stands out for its exceptional durability, corrosion resistance, iron-free contamination and significantly lower cost of use compared to expandable abrasives, providing an economical and efficient solution.

In which sectors does stainless steel abrasive media find extensive application?

Stainless steel shot is used in a wide range of applications, including metal treatments, surface preparations, cleaning, paint removal, and various specialized processes in industries such as automotive, aerospace, metallurgy, and wind energy.

What are the benefits of using stainless steel shot in the metallurgy sector?

Benefits include improved recyclability vs expandable abrasives and being iron-free contamination, better coating adhesion, increased shot durability, reproducible process control, and excellent surface and shinny finish quality, making stainless steel shot an ideal choice for metallurgical applications.

What are the key economic advantages of using Stelux™ stainless steel shot?

Advantages include significantly increased durability, reduced costs related to dust, better visiblity improving working speed, and used abrasive disposal, lower machine wear, and increased energy and cleaning efficiency.

How does stainless steel brasive media contribute to preventing rust on high-value items?

Above leaving an iron-free blasted surface, by eliminating the possibility of embedded steel shot particles in metal surfaces, stainless steel shot prevents rust points on high-value items such as steel frames of recreational vehicles or car-hauling trailers.

How do the customized options of the Stelux™ range meet unique customer requirements?

Stelux™ offers customized sieving and blend options, ranging from rough profiles to high-nickel content options, to meet the unique requirements of customers in the field of stainless steel abrasive media.

Which grade should I choose — STELUX C, CN or CG?

C for cleaning and finishing, CN for the highest cleanliness requirements, CG for creating a surface profile before coating.
